Sadly many (about 7 out of 10) people in the UK die leaving no Will, often resulting in:
A great deal of Tax being paid which, with just a small amount of planning, could have been saved.
The estate not going to those they would have wished to benefit.
A lot of heartache in sorting out a muddle.
Wasted time and costs for those left to sort things out.
Making your Wills may not be at the top of your to-do list, but it’s crucial that you have a Will in place to ensure that your loved ones are cared for in the way you want, and ideally, the most Tax efficient arrangements are in place to preserve your wealth for your beneficiaries.
We encourage everyone to make Wills. If nothing else, it’ll give you peace of mind allowing you to get on and enjoy your life.
Changing a Will
If you want to make some changes to an existing Will we can help you with that, either by making a new Will or by creating a supplemental document called a Codicil, that varies specific aspects.
Estate and Tax Planning
Making well-planned and effective Wills goes hand in hand with estate and tax planning. It’s important to consider any inheritance Tax mitigation strategies and ways to ensure that your hard-earned wealth goes to your intended beneficiaries. If you’re in the fortunate position of having no Inheritance Tax exposure then you may wish to consider ways to ensure your wealth goes down to your children and grandchildren.
You may also want your share of your wealth to go directly to your children on the death of your surviving partner or spouse so that in the event of your partner or spouse remarrying or living with another person your share would be protected against any third party claim.
International Estate and Tax Planning
If you’re resident in the UK, working and living here, married to a foreign-born person, due an inheritance from abroad or holding any property or other investments abroad this requires specialist advice we can help with.
We can suggest strategies to mitigate any potential estate and or Inheritance Taxes in both countries and advise you on the way forward.
