After more than half a century serving the people of Halesworth, our colleague and friend, Jonathan Margarson, is retiring from legal practice.
Jonathan’s career began back in 1963, when he joined Cross Ram & Co as a clerk, following in the footsteps of his father, George, who had worked at the firm since 1935 and qualified at the age of 60. Just five years later, in 1968, Jonathan qualified as a solicitor and soon became junior partner alongside his father, taking over the firm after the death of its previous owner.
In recent years, Jonathan has been a Consultant Solicitor here at Atkins Dellow, specialising in Wills, Probates and Trusts, and as a long-standing member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, he has been a trusted guide to countless families. Earlier in his career, he also worked extensively across criminal and civil law, appearing at Halesworth Magistrates’ Court and County Court.
Jonathan’s roots in Halesworth run deep. A former pupil of Bungay Grammar School, he has always been closely involved in the community, serving as chairman of his parish council, dedicating 35 years to Halesworth Rotary Club, and contributing to local hockey, including service on the County Executive.
Reflecting on his career, Jonathan said:
“It’s been quite a journey, seeing how much has changed from the days of typewriters and carbon paper to computers and digital records. I’m pleased that Atkins Dellow has continued the tradition of serving this community with a wider range of specialisms and services.”
To us, Jonathan has been more than a colleague. His team describe him as “loyal and efficient,” with many staff working alongside him for years.

Jonathan’s retirement truly marks the end of an era for Halesworth. We are thankful for his contribution to both the firm and the wider community. As Jonathan steps back, we carry forward the principles he has championed – care for clients, commitment to community, and dedication to doing the right thing.
